Butterfly Puppet-making Workshop
The centerpiece of the Cambridge River Festival Opening Procession/Parade is now the spectacular giant Brother Blue Puppet followed by a host of oversized butterfly puppets, created by Behind The Mask Studio in 2010 to commemorate the life and work of this master storyteller. We are now offering this workshop to share one of the techniques that we use to make our butterfly puppets. These techniques will also teach you how to construct magical fairy and bat wings for Halloween and other events. Please join us as a community to celebrate our beloved storyteller’s legacy and add to this important Cambridge event!Brother Blue was the official storyteller of the cities of Cambridge and Boston, and was a beloved figure on the scene for almost 50 years. Butterflies were Brother Blue’s icon and a universal symbol of rebirth, transformation, and celebration.
Parade Puppeteer Opportunity
Participants may choose to create their own butterflies, which will be included in the parade, and then go home with you, or volunteer to help build butterflies that will remain part of the official parade puppet group. Participants are encouraged to walk in the parade with their butterflies, and bring friends and family to join us in the parade as butterfly puppeteers too!
